RESUMO

Presents a situational analysis of St. Vincent and the Grenadines by considering the health situation of children and women; social development programmes; the legal status of women and children; and structural causes of the socio-economic situation. Recommends that the lesser the impact of economic adjustment on the vulnerable groups, measures should be put in place to increase domestic food production to offset the impact of increased prices; the role of the private sector, the government and Non-Government Organizations in addressing the problems must be evaluated; more cost-effective use of social expenditure must be investigated; and, greater effort must be made to increase the training of women to get marketable skills and generate their own income.

RESUMO

The heights and weights of 9,232 Barbadian school children, aged 5 to 15 years and predominantly of African origin, were measured. The children were slightly larger than school children in Jamaica and in St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguila. They were bigger than London children measured in 1905-12 but smaller than London children measured in 1959. Tables are given which will provide a baseline for future studies of secular change in the growth of school children in Barbados.(AU)

RESUMO

Since 1954 UNICEF has given skimmed milk powder to the children of the colony of St. Kitts Nevis Anguilla. Even in the short period since then, there has been a statistically significant improvement in the death of the children as shown by a comparison of the number of malnutrition deaths in the age group 1-4 before and after the use of the milk. It is shown further that this additional milk is the only major change which can account for the improved nutritional status. (AU)
